shoe per diem 26/12.2010 – skates!

26 Dec

360:365 skates, originally uploaded by julochka.

the whole family got skates for christmas and we swept a big area clear out on our lake and skated the entire afternoon, taking only breaks for hot apple cider, delectable little mushroom tarts and to warm our hands over the fire. best present ever, i tell you. and better than boxing any day. 🙂

what is boxing day anyway?

you should try it! go to a rink, rent some skates (tho’ it may not be good for your knee). it’s great – if you’ve rollerbladed, you’ll be ice skating in no time.

    lovely photo!

but i truly wholeheartedly hate skating. since childhood. no matter how many winter skating classes i took (and getting there in the end taking my diploma) i never go the hang of it. to afraid of falling, hate the slippery ice and the sharp skates. i would never ever skate on frozen lakes (even if i could), no matter how solid frozen they supposedly are. brr, scary, the depths that lie beneath…

it looks lovely with skaters so seemingly effortlessly floating back and forth on ice (and my dream job when i was wee was ice princess:), but no, very much not my cup of tea that…

i think even if we fell through the ice on our lake, you’d be able to stand and not even be wet to your waist. there are big cracks now in the ice, but when we drilled into it with a 12cm drill bit, husband didn’t even come to the bottom of the ice, so it’s solid!

it’s so much fun! especially when we build a fire down by the lake and take food and warm drinks with us. then we can skate for hours!
