A question…

15 May

It’s been unseasonably chilly here in Baltimore this Spring. But, soon enough, it’ll be super hot a humid (which I like).

I also really like these sandals:

(from http://birthdayshoes.com/luna-sandals-catamount-original-review-huaraches)

This is my favorite style of sandal. But in this century, they aren’t typically worn by men. The Luna Sandal company has started making these running sandals for barefoot runners (or, sandaled runners, I guess). I’d like to try them, though they still look a little dainty. And I don’t run.

I wish there was a men’s version of this style of sandal (aside from these). Has anyone ever seen anything like that?  I don’t know why it’s just now occurring to me to ask you, my shoeish friends. I did find someone who makes handmade sandals and can do it (YAY!) but I’m wondering if there are any other places…maybe not until the next century.

I’ll take any answers offline.

Working from Home

15 May

Yes, I often wear socks with flip flops. Don’t judge.

Easter Knees

9 Apr

I had a game last night and I wore these stupid soccer socks (team colors). I didn’t figure out until after the bout that my knee pads slipped on the acrylic. But this is no worse than falling off a bike as a kid. Or, roller skating. It was a great game.

New Skates

15 Dec

I started roller skating last May. I’m on my second pair of skates now – I’ve skated in a couple of co-ed roller derby games and it’s way fun.

My first pair of skates were a size too large and cost $50. I’ve upgraded to a better fitting  pair of cheap skates (get it?)  with the hopes of springing for awesome skates later in the spring if I’m still at it. I’ve replaced the wheels and bearings once already.

Ready for Fall

21 Oct

New Doc Martens for fall. Yep.

ice + knees

8 Aug

Had a great day skating, but fell twice. Ice feels so good. No, those aren’t my skates in the distance.

Gorgeous Floor

25 Jul

It’s like we were meant for each other.

Jack Purcell

24 Jul

One of my favorite things is discovering footprints in paint on floors and sidewalks.  I found this one last night in Highlandtown -  a neighborhood in Baltimore. It’s very old paint.

3-day weekend

4 Jul

It was a three-day great weekend adventure with art, museums, gardening and ending at an old haunt in Baltimore. I managed to get a shot with all four of us in it. :)

Father’s Day

20 Jun

My girl sprung for these as a Dad’s day present. I saw them on Zappos months ago and flipped out.

Biking

16 Jun

My trusty sambas on my trust green beach cruiser.

Team Practice

8 Jun

I’m not as young as you used to be

6 Jun

I was up until 4:30am finishing this.  I’ve learned that sleep deprivation is good for:
a) Hallucinating on the train to work
b) Picking out clothes for work
c) Diminishing social contacts via incomprehensible blather in list form
d) My typing skillz

It’s glorious out today. I’m glad I’m awake.

Flag Day

6 Jun

These are my favorite summer kicks – pink Chacos. I found them on Zappos a couple of years ago – my wife was extremely jealous that I found pink ones. Oddly, they didn’t have them for women. We put up the flags we’ve been laboring over around the garden, hence the staple gun.

Stay on Target (part 2)

2 Jun

I want to sail this down the Chesapeake Bay.

Or something.

Stay on Target (part one)

1 Jun

Seen in Target tonight. The  dressing room attendants  were getting suspicious of my photographic activities. In my haste, I failed to capture my own feet.

Roller Derby

29 May

I learned how to roller skate today. Roller derby practice starts Tuesday. YAY!

Really Big Skates

26 May

I got some used skates today, y’all. They are a half size bigger than I would think I need, but they feel good.

I’m going to a roller derby clinic on Sunday. Very exciting!

Conference Shoes

22 May

I presented a talk yesterday at Baltimore’s FitBloggin’ conference.  I spoke about “The Art of Seeing,” and how to take better pictures for your blog. Thanks in part to Shoe-Per-Diem, I’m starting a  365 daily photo on my own site.

After my talk, I was visiting with fellow speaker Katy and she said “I like your shoes.” I had been thinking the exact same thing about her and she agreed to pose for today’s snap. :)

Thanks Katy!

Sunday

15 May

We, as a family,  painted (prayer)flags for the garden today – here’s one of my contributions. Please pardon my goofy feet.

White Zombies

13 May

It’s been a crazy busy Friday. I’m at my favorite Chinese place near my office waiting for soup.

I decided to wear my White (Sambas) Zombies to work today. I’m pretending they are white loafers, a la Peewee Herman. I don’t actually have ANY loafers, much less white ones, but hey, I can pretend, right?

My little one confused Sambas with Zombies and the name stuck.

Happy Friday!

-Jim

What’s YOUR favorite pair?

12 May

It’s the last night of class, it’s gloriously muggy out and my students are taking a test.

I’m wearing my favorite kicks tonight – Adidas Sambas.  If I were stranded on a paradise island (or, say, trapped alone in an endless abandoned shopping mall), and I could only have one pair of shoes (not sandals or flip-flops – I’m qualifying this as just “shoes”), I’d pick the classic Adidas Samba. They are instantly comfortable, like old friends, and they last through years of abuse.

In fact, I dedicate this post to the Adidas Samba.

[Note: Adidas started making an "originals" line and they squeak like crazy. It's the classic sambas that rule.]

So, dear Shoe Per Diem friends – if YOU were stranded somewhere for an indeterminate period of time, what’s the one pair of shoes you’d want to have with you?

Test # 2

3 May

Tonight is the second test in this class. While they are quietly struggling with my questions, I’m doing a quick post.

I think it’s fun that the seasons completely change through a term, from the start ’til the end. Happily, it’s still light out. I’m glad to be heading into the sunny side of the year.

Yard Work Sunday

1 May

It’s a cool, overcast day in Baltimore  – a perfect day for mowing, sawing and patching concrete.

Happy Sunday!

Docs

27 Apr

I just finished teaching the “hardest” lecture of the term and have four more to go, plus the finals night. Can’t wait.

My sister-in-law got me a pair of Docs in London over 20 years ago. I loved them because they didn’t have the yellow stitching. I wore them ALL THE TIME for years.

I found these Doc on Zappos recently (no yellow stitching) and, well, I love them. Wish I’d thought to look there sooner.

Derby Night

24 Apr

My little one is crazy about Roller Derby, and we attended a game tonight.

A Fine Kettle of Fish

22 Apr

Happy Friday, friends! Here’s the finished piece (more pics here).

Luci, I was up until 4am finishing this. Almost made it to 5. :)

WIP snap

21 Apr

I’m using some of my vacation to catch up on some projects – here’s a work in progress snap of my latest diorama. It should be done tomorrow.

Spring is on Deck

20 Apr

My youngest kidlet and I went biking/skating today.  It was a perfect day in Baltimore.

Howdy!

20 Apr

My name is Jim and I make Web sites at a university.  I also teach Web design and coding at a community college. My day started today at 5am. I’m taking a couple of vacation days and needed to clear my desk. It was a great day, but the best part was joining this blog.
